Selecting good food can happen in cafeterias
Selecting healthy food options can be a challenge. Many people are looking for quick meals without thinking of the food’s substance. The reality for most students is that they not only have the time to eat, but they don't know the right meal to choose when they are in the cafeteria. In choosing good and healthy food to eat, there are three easy steps to remember and follow: eating in moderation, having plenty of fruits and vegetables, and consuming healthy carbs.
  • Moderation is key - Try not to think of certain foods as off limits. When you limit certain foods, it is natural to want those foods. If you are drawn towards sweet, salty, and unhealthy foods, start by reducing portion sizes. Think to eat smaller portions. Use smaller plates so you can think about serving sizes in realistic terms.
  • Choose fruits and vegetables - Fruits and vegetables are the foundation of a healthy body. They are low in calories and heavy in nutrients. Fruits and vegetables are packed with vitamins, minerals, antioxidants, and fiber. Try to eat a rainbow of fruits and vegetables every day and with every meal. The antioxidants in fruits and vegetables help protect against certain types of cancer and other diseases.
  • Eat healthy carbs - Select healthy carbs and fiber sources. It is best to choice whole grains for long lasting energy. Whole grains are rich in antioxidants, which help to protect against heart disease, certain cancers, and diabetes. Some of the healthy carbs include whole grains, beans, fruits, and vegetables. Healthy carbs are digested slowly and will help you feel full longer.
Healthy eating is not about depriving yourself of the foods you love. It’s about feeling great, having more energy, and keeping yourself healthy. This can be achieved by learning some nutrition basics and using them in a way that works for you. When you decide to actually take the time and create a healthy good meal which is available in most cafeterias you will have a better point of view in regards to food.
